Buenos Aires has numerous cafés and it seems as if there is one on every corner. The cafes are not just coffee places either as you can find combinations of pizza, ice cream, gelato pastries (medialunas, empandas, etc..), and beer . They are bustling with people all day and night. The coffees are European in style and size and always served with a tiny glass of soda water. The most common and traditional item to have with the coffee is something called an alfajor which at the most basic is soft cookie layers with dulce de leche in between and covered with chocolate. There are many variations too. Dulce de Leche is a staple here for sweets of all kind. Lemon based desserts are extremely common also. Visiting many cafés is quickly becoming a daily event for us.

I read this TIP: There are an overwhelming number of alfajores pre-packaged and sold in kiosks, but bakery-fresh is the way to go. They’re usually half the price and taste much better.
