The Yellow Pin is where we currently are, with some delay. Points of interest will also be added as we visit them and lodging ones are already there. Click on blue flight segment lines for flight info and real time tracking (lighter segments are completed). Red Segments have train info and green are for car segments.

History

It all started with the winning of 2 first class Continental RTW tickets from the American Express Wishlist way back in 2007 equivalently delivered with 560K miles. 6 years later with the merger of United and Continental, topping off the account to 700K miles with credit card offers, and a planned Leave of Absence from work, this trip is actually taking place starting 4/3/2013 and ending 6/28/2013.

Venezia

Venice is nothing short of a special place. Sure it is obviously overcrowded with tourists and probably over hyped, but if you spend even a couple hours walking and navigating the maze system that is the streets here, you can't help but know its incredible.

First things first, Google Maps has been as useless as Apple Maps were in Australia. Although I guess there haven't been enough tourists falling in the Canals to make a stink over it. Almost every street name is incorrect, and good luck on finding any point of interest. GPS resolution on the iPhone is not even good enough to let you know what side alley you are on. I will give credit though that the actual street routing is fine, as it does seem to know where bridges are at least to complete walking directions. And seriously, there are bridges over the canals everywhere, except the Grand Canal, only three walking bridges exist. Most private residences seem to even have their own bridge over a canal to their front door. Everything is compact enough to walk, but water taxis and gondolas are in abundance, and as expensive as you can imagine.

As a side note (since I love to bitch about Apple's shitty hardware), the iPhone 5 is almost useless in the Italian cities we have been; so much for a world phone, and we've confirmed it with locals.

Everywhere you look, the buildings are pretty here, and also at the same time slanted. I doubt there is a right angle to be found. With some ~30 churches and ~30 museums, you are never at a loss of something to see on a walk. The level of detail on these building is insanely special. The food is quite different and delightful compared to Sicily and even Sorrento, with seafood being a huge focus. If you find a nice hidden gem restaurant with a good menu and prices, then jump on it, as they are definitely the best to choose. Basically you don't want a tourist menu, a person outside hard selling the restaurant, or anything remotely close to a canal or major attraction.

Today We found the best Venetian mask shop. Let's just say we can't wait for Halloween (or the next masquerade party)!

This is a must visit place for anyone who has not been. Maybe not a repeat visit though. Please enjoy some pictures we've taken.
